Unsuccessful plastic surgery: what to do?

Any person, before deciding to undergo cosmetic surgery, should be very clearly understood that each, even the most simple plastic, carries risks. As they say themselves surgeons, plastic body – a kind of lottery, in which someone wins and someone loses. Of course, everyone wants to be lucky, but then there are those who are really out of luck – the clinic, the surgeon, and even with his own body. And every time after an unsuccessful operation, together with the disappointment come up legitimate questions: Who is to blame and what to do?

A couple of years ago, held a joint Russian-Swiss market research of plastic surgery of the two countries. The study was very deep, it affected almost all the nuances, from range of services and pricing to qualified medical personnel and insurance surgeons. Above all, was conducted a sociological survey of operated patients, which showed that 35-40% of them were dissatisfied with the results of operations. When this was revealed interesting pattern: all the “disgruntled” virtually no information about the possible consequences and complications. In other words, they are not quite aware of the risks, which were, and most of them were extremely disappointed with the consequences of plasticity. Those patients who were among the “happy” to recognize that risk willingly, therefore not expecting any miracles, and quite happy with his new appearance.

One of the cornerstones of this study was to insure against “medical errors”. In Russia there are no such profession as a plastic surgeon. In principle, this profession after passing specific courses can master any surgeon. But if there still is a choice, because a real professional can be seen at once, then what about those cases in which the unfortunate patient falls “under the knife” is not quite good doctor? It is impossible not to recall that in the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation is also no concept of “medical error”, so the litigation, usually lasts for a very long time and end up more often than not in favor of the injured patient. According to the Moscow City Bureau of Forensic Medicine, about 8% of the total number of claims filed include complaints of various kinds of failures in plastic surgery. For comparison, in Switzerland the number of complaints comes to only 0.1%. In addition, in Switzerland for each operation is a mandatory insurance contract, in case of failure or error doctor ensures the patient financial compensation, and solid. In Russia, the procedure for insurance resorted to only individual physicians with great experience and valuing our reputation, and in such failures almost never happens.

So what can you do to avoid unpleasant consequences? How can I protect myself from disappointment, and your health from harm? Unfortunately, some definite scheme of action does not exist here, but a few tips you can still.

First, before you decide to entrust their appearance to a particular surgeon, do not hesitate to ask him a direct question – whether he is insured in case of unsuccessful plastic, and if so, what company. Believe the doctor’s word is also no reason – it is better to ask him to produce documentary evidence. If the doctor is sure of himself and his professionalism, he never fails in this. Ideally, you can still call the insurance company and ask for confirmation, but most likely, this information does not give a stranger.

Second, the greatest confidence should inspire clinic where each patient before surgery offered to sign an agreement on the responsibility of the parties. This contract is written, someone from the staff will respond in the event of an unsuccessful operation, who will correct the consequences, for whose account, in what time frame. This document provides the client with full assurance that in a critical situation, the court will take his side. But the trouble is that clinics offering such a contract, is extremely small. In the majority of the patient is given a paper to sign some sort, “horror stories”, as it is called surgeons. It all responsibility for adverse effects of the operation entirely borne by the customer. By signing the “horror stories”, he automatically loses the right to defend their interests in court – the doctors or not guilty of anything, the patient knew what was going on. Of course, by signing such a treaty should be abandoned.
